Not everyone seems to even notice that the oil filter seals supplied for the Cannister filter (JLM-9544)
do not fit the groove in the filter housing. I have ordered from all of the usuals and even checked genuine
Jaguar filters. The o-rings supplied are either to thin or to fat for the groove.
These are the two rings supplied. They are not technically o-rings as they are square cut.
The one on the left is .125" cross section. The one on the right is .065". The groove on the
filter housing is .100" The wider one will not go in the groove. The thinner one will fall into place
and can fold over or shear when the cannister is tightened down. The cannister (.550") is also thinner
than the groove so getting it to sit exactly on the ring is pure luck.
Fortunately, Wix filters has figured
it out and supplies a .100" wide ring that fits perfectly. NAPA (Genuine Parts) uses the same filter
but drops the 5 so Their number is 1183.
The filter itself is on the left. It has a metal support sleeve on the inside and outside. The one on the
right has one on the inside. Nothing wrong with that but the Wix seems more substantial. It is worth
searching out when changing your oil. The proper seal can be used a couple of times as it does not
fold over or get mangled.
I have had the thin ones leak and come out totally destroyed during oil changes.
Engines are to expensive to fix from running without oil to not have the proper sealing in the filter area.
The suppliers that make the filters that everyone is selling will continue to supply ill fitting parts as long as
people keep buying them. You can ask them and will probably get the answer "we have sold thousands
and have never had a complaint". Your car, your call. The Wix filters are a bit more expensive so when
you take your XKE in for an oil change, do you think the shop is using one or just one of the filters
supplied by most all of the usuals?
